Malina
Ingeborg Bachmann
Austrian novelist, poet, playwright, one of the outstanding figures of German-language literature of the 20th century, laureate of the Georg Büchner Prize, the Austrian Grand State Prize and other literary awards. He studied philosophy, psychology, German studies and law at the universities of Innsbruck, Graz and Vienna. He received an academic degree for his critical analysis of Heidegger’s philosophy, but was deeply interested in Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language. During his short life, he gained recognition mainly for two books of poetry published in the 1950s. In the 1960s, he published two collections of short stories. His only completed novel is “Malina” (1971), and he left seven more novels unfinished. The thematic layers of human psychological limits, the establishment of truth, the place of women in society, and feminism are presented in Bachmann’s work with a remarkable blend of poetry and intellect. Since 1977, a literary prize named after Bachmann has been awarded annually in Klagenfurt, his birthplace.
